Home Fire Safety Tips

The following guide is provided to help you keep your home safe from fire.

Home Fire Safety Tips
Preventing Electrical Fires.
Ensure any electrical appliances meet the relevant British safety standards. Look for the BS Kite Mark.
Appliances that generate high heat and sparks (e.g. welding, grinding, kilns etc.) are not permitted at Chantry Waters.

Always check appliances, their plugs and leads for damage before each use. Do not use the appliance if it is damaged.
Only use high-powered appliances with a plug socket to themselves. (e.g. heaters, tumble dryers etc.)
Unplug appliances when they are not in use.
Do not run appliances like washing machines and tumble dryers when you are asleep or out.
Never leave charging appliances unattended. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging an appliance.
Only use extension leads or adaptors as a temporary measure. Try to plug each appliance into its own socket. When using an extension or adaptor. Ensure it is routed where it will not cause a trip hazard or get damaged. An extension lead or adaptor will have a limit to how many amps it can take. Do not overload them as this may cause a fire.
Preventing Fires from Smoking
Smoking is prohibited in all communal areas, in the garages, on balconies and roof terraces, and in all short hold tenancy agreement let apartments.
Smoking is permitted in the grounds.
DO NOT allow smoke to blow into the building through open doors or windows.
DO NOT drop smoking litter. Use one of the wall mounted ash trays located by the entrances.
If you smoke in your apartment, use a proper ashtray, and put it on a secure surface so it can’t tip over. Empty ashtrays regularly when they are cold.
DO NOT smoke in bed, when you’re tired, if you are taking medicine that makes you drowsy, or if you’ve been drinking.
Emollient creams for dry skin conditions can soak into clothing, dressings and bedding leaving a flammable residue. So be careful if you also smoke.

Preventing Fires When Cooking
Give cooking your full attention. Don’t rush or get distracted. Never leave cooking unattended.
DO NOT cook when under the influence of alcohol or medication that may cause drowsiness.
Do not wear loose or trailing clothing when cooking (e.g. ties). Keep towels and cloths away from your hob.
Keep your oven, hob and grill clean. A build-up of grease can ignite and cause a fire.
Make sure saucepan handles don’t stick out – so they don’t get knocked off the stove.
DO NOT use old fashioned stove-top chip pans. Use only thermostat controlled, electric, deep fat fryers. They can’t overheat.
Double check the cooker is off when you’ve finished cooking.
If a pan catches fire, turn off the heat by turning off the cooker, by turning off the power at the fused spur, or at your fuse board. Cover the pan with your fire blanket if you can do so safely. NEVER throw water over it.
