How to Test Your Smoke Alarms

All residents MUST test the smoke alarms in their flats once a week. It is vital for the protection of your household. Follow the steps below for how to do this. If you are unable to test your smoke alarms yourself for any reason (such as hearing impairment or mobility issues reaching them), please inform the Fire Warden via our CONTACT FORM, and we will arrange assistance to carry out the tests.

How to Test Your Smoke Alarms
Your apartment is covered by interlinked smoke and heat detectors which will alert you to a fire in your home. NEVER cover, paint over or otherwise disable your smoke detectors. It is essential that you TEST these alarms ONCE A WEEK.
Step 1. Make sure that everyone in your apartment knows you are about to test the alarm.
Step 2. Look at each of the alarms in your apartment. Check that: There is a green light always on, There are no red/flashing lights, The alarm is not beeping, There is no obvious damage, The alarm is not dusty.
Step 3. Press the TEST/HUSH button on ONE of your alarms for 10 seconds. The alarm should start to sound.
Step 4. 10 seconds after the first alarm starts to sound, ALL the alarms in your apartment should also sound.
Step 5. Check that all the alarms in your home are sounding. It can be useful to have another person with you to help you check.
Step 6. Release the test button. The first alarm will stop sounding within a couple of seconds. The other alarms may take 5-10 seconds to stop sounding.
Step 7. Each week, rotate which of your alarms you press the test button on, to ensure that they all get tested in turn.
